The recent verdict of Supreme Court of India on Shree Mandir
Parikrama Prakalp(heritage corridor project) has not gone down well with the BJP
leaders and office bearers of Shree Mandir Suraksha Abhiyan.
Although they have become upset, they are not hopeless.
Members of Suraksha Abhiyan have decided to carry on the awareness campaign
with renewed vigour.
In the opinion of BJP Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi, the
apex court's judgment has not gone against those spearheading the Suraksha
Abhiyan of Puri Temple. She said the verdict has cautioned Odisha Government
not to infringe upon the ASI Act and undertake the heritage corridor work within
the ambit of law. Sarangi told a press conference in Bhubaneswar recently that
the Supreme Court's ruling is being viewed as a victory of the members of
Suraksha Abhiyan.
Pt Mahesh Sahu, State Joint Convener of Shree Mandir
Suraksha Abhiyan, in his Facebook post said he has all respect for the verdict
of Honourable Supreme Court but left with no option than to accept the verdict.
He, however, said he has reservations on whatever activities being undertaken
in the name of heritage corridor in Puri.
Meanwhile, Pt Sahu has described the statement of Puri BJD
MP Pinaki Mishra as 'unfortunate' who said the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD
dispensation in Odisha is striving to develop the pilgrimage city Puri like
Vatican City. He further said Mishra's statement on the pilgrim city as childish
and added that it is unbecoming that a person of his stature harbours such
unreligious beliefs about Jagannath Dham. Pt Sahu also cited slokas from
Skandha Purana on the holiness of Puri Dham to bring home the point about its
sacredness.
Pt Sahu said Shree Mandir Suraksha Abhiyan will continue its
awareness activity throughout the State by staging mass dharnas and padayatras
in block and district levels and added that a review petition will be filed in
Supreme Court in this regard soon. He said a meeting will be held at Buddha
temple in Bhubaneswar on June 12 in which important personalities from
different walks of life will be attending to discuss about the future course of
action for spearheading the movement.

On June 3, the Supreme Court of India had quashed two
petitions filed against excavation being undertaken around Jagannath Temple under
Puri Shree Mandir Parikrama Prakalp (heritage corridor project) setting at rest
the hue and cry over threat to the iconic temple due to the construction
activity.
The apex court has called the pleas as 'frivolous' and imposed
penalty on petitioners amounting to Rs 1 lakh each for filing unjustified petitions
thereby wasting valuable time of the court.
A bench comprising Justice BR Gavai and Justice Hima Kohli ruled
that the temple corridor project has been undertaken for providing amenities to
the devotees and the excavation work is being done in accordance with the Ancient
Monuments and Archeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act 1958.
Worth mentioning here that Puri Shankaracharya Swami
Nischalananda Saraswati had come down heavily on Naveen Patnaik–led government
in Odisha over the heritage corridor issue saying such work will turn Puri
Tapobhumi into a Bhogobhumi.
The Puri Seer alleged that in the name of development Mutts
and relics are being razed and warned the government of serious consequences if
such work is not abandoned immediately. Shankaracharya told the media in Puri
that the Puri beach has already turned out to be a paradise for drunkards and
antisocial elements.
He urged the Prime Minister of India and the Odisha Chief
Minister to initiate measures for stopping desecration of the holy place and
added that the pilgrim city should never be allowed to become an amusement
park.
On May 31, members of Talcher chapter of Shree Mandir
Suraksha Samiti were on a mass dharna in front of Sub-Collector's office
protesting against the alleged illegal excavation work being undertaken within
100 metre radius of Puri Temple under the heritage corridor project. The mass
dharna was attended by Pt Mahesh Sahu, State Joint Convener of Shree Mandir
Suraksha Abhiyan.
